Legalizing Low Riders

Wow, I remember when I was first exposed to Low Rider culture. In the Mission Friday nights were popping. The oldies were blasting and the cholos and cholas were out in force. All of the was such eye candy for me: cars, cholas bonitas, and good music. I so wanted to be a cholo growing up. There were some badasses in my ‘hood. Shit, Dolores park aka dog shit park was full of cholos with their scary pit bulls. Crazy and dangerous. I was transfixed.  Little did I know about the issues the Latino community was facing like racism, drug abuse and addiction, violence and just the act of existing was hard for many including me.

Flash forward to October 2023 and finally low riding has been legalized again. Forty years of banning Latino/chicano culture was a long ass time but it made sense in that racist California there would be law banning cholos from the streets.

Listening to Hot Chip

So I am listening to Hot Chip on Apple Music and I am listening to the song Over and Over. The concept of dance punk is just the perfect combo of agro with a beat. I was just fantasizing about being in high school again being a b-boy punk rocker. That would have been lit! I would have sported a short Mohawk with hip hop style clothing. I might have even had a pithy tattoo that was so relevant at the time.  I would have been dancing a lot. Drugs and alcohol would not be in my life because I would make music and dancing my drugs of choice. I would love to have been more self confident in school and with relationships but I’m happy how I turned out anyways but still it would have been fun to have more of my shit together in some areas.
